Surfing Season Begins With Netscape's $50,000 Summer Search Sweepstakes
The Speed and Convenience of Searching the Web Directly From the Netscape Browser Generates Results for Netcenter Members
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 15, 2000 - Netscape Communications, a subsidiary of America Online Inc. (NYSE: AOL), is kicking off the start of summer with an exclusive promotion highlighting the ease and convenience of searching the Web directly from the URL field of the Netscape 6 and Communicator browsers.
Beginning today, current and new Netscape Netcenter members will have the opportunity to register to win a $50,000 grand prize when they conduct a special summer theme Web search directly from the URL field of their Netscape browser. The six-week promotional sweepstakes will feature the benefits of searching using any search term, question or one of the many powerful Netscape Internet Keywords as well as featuring the relevant search results provided through Netscape Search.
Netcenter users can register for the sweepstakes by entering in one of two search terms directly into their URL field of their Netscape browser. By typing "search vacation" or "buy surf board" into the location window at the top of their Netscape browser, users will have the ability to register to win $50,000. At the same time, they will find out just how easy it is to search the Web for many types of information and to shop for products through the Shop@Netscape platform. Netscape Netcenter members can also register by visiting http://home.netscape.com/promotions/searchsweeps2000/acqsss.html.
By typing in a generic search term into the URL field (e.g., "cycling"), a search will be conducted via Netscape Search, powered by Netscape's award winning Open Directory Project. With Netscape Search, users receive better results, which are organized and ranked by relevancy, to help them quickly find information of interest. Netscape Search delivers high quality matches and relevant categories and sites, rather than sites and information listed alphabetically. Netscape Search draws results from Netscape's Open Directory Project, the Web's most comprehensive search directory, with over 1.8 million sites well organized into more than 270,000 categories and reviewed by 25,000 subject experts. Netscape Search also features cutting-edge technology from Google Inc., a next-generation search engine with the ability to quickly pinpoint relevant sites.
Netscape's Internet Keywords further benefit Netscape browser users by quickly locating specific sites for products, companies and services simply by typing words and phrases directly into the URL field. By using certain keywords that act as action words, or "keyverbs," users can do specialized searches that can easily bring up specific and targeted information including specific stock quotes and company information as well as personal applications such as email, an instant message feature and calendar.
For instance, users can retrieve stock quotes and company news and profiles by simply typing "quote" and the ticker symbol or company name of choice in the browser location bar. Consumers can type in common words or topics such as "new york movies" or "san fransico sports" to retrieve the latest local information and listings from AOL Digital City's extensive library of up-to-date regional content.
Sweepstakes rules and regulations can be found at http://home.netscape.com/promotions/searchsweeps2000/acqssru.html. Netscape 6 Preview Release 1 and Netscape Communicator are available for download free of charge on Netscape Netcenter at http://home.netscape.com/download.
