Netscape Search Goes Global, Launching On Eleven Netcenter Sites Around The World

Netscape Search to Provide Relevant Local Language Results from 1.8 Million Hand-Selected Listings in Netscape's Award-Winning Open Directory Project

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 7, 2000 - Netscape Communications, a subsidiary of America Online Inc. (NYSE: AOL), today announced the launch of its Netscape Search Internet search service on eleven Netcenter sites across Europe, Latin America and Australia offering Netscape&ref; Netcenter users fast and relevant same language search results.

Currently the majority of Web content is in English, yet the non-English speaking population and number of non-English Web sites on the Internet are growing rapidly. International Netscape Search allows Netscape users all over the world to retrieve a much wider range of relevant and local Web-based information.

Beginning today, visitors to the Netscape Netcenter sites in the U.K., France, Germany, Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Brazil and Latin America will have easy and direct access to the award-wining Netscape Search platform. These countries make up the first phase of an international search launch that will include more than 20 additional countries in the next few months throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Searching is even faster and easier with the new Netscape 6 browser with integrated features including persistent results through the My Sidebar feature. The preview release version of Netscape 6 is currently available in English, Japanese, French and German.

Netscape Search is optimized to give users the fastest, most accurate, comprehensive, and freshest search results. Built on Netscape's fast-growing Open Directory Project and utilizing Netscape's Internet Keywords, Netscape Search allows consumers to search the Web using simple words and phrases right from the browser location bar. With its innovative FirstPage Results system, Netscape Search is the first Internet search service to deliver quick, accurate and relevant search results on the first page. Netscape Search is constantly updated and its categories are "freshness" dated to provide the most current information available. The service also features cutting-edge technology from Google Inc., a next-generation search engine with the ability to quickly pinpoint relevant sites.

"Today's global Internet user is looking for the fastest and most convenient way to find relevant results in their own language," said Jim Martin, senior vice president of Netscape and general manager of Netcenter. "By drawing from the tremendous success of the Open Directory Project and the localized content it offers, Netscape has created a search service that's robust, easily accessible and targeted to the specific search needs of people in their native language and the ever growing worldwide Internet audience."

Netscape Search employs several first-of-a-kind features to offer consumers the following:

Fast Results through Netscape's Internet Keywords
Search the Internet faster using the URL window of the Netscape browser with Netscape's Internet Keywords. Netscape Search enables users to search the Web directly from the browser URL field gaining instant access search results. For example, type "mp3" into the Location box and search results will be returned immediately. Or, try a Keyword Shortcut such as typing the word "quote" and the stock ticker symbol to get an instant stock quote.

Accurate Results through the Netscape Search FirstPage Results System
Get results that are accurate, well organized and relevancy ranked to narrow the search and find information quickly. With its innovative FirstPage Results System, Netscape Search delivers accurate and relevant search results on the first page - quickly and conveniently. For names of specific companies or organizations Netscape Search presents the Official Web Sites first. Netscape Search brings the best category matches to the top of the results through Netscape's relevancy-ranking technology, eliminating wasteful drilling through alphabetic lists.

Comprehensive Results from Netscape's Open Directory Project
Comprehensive Results are provided through Netscape's award winning Open Directory Project. Currently the largest human-powered search directory, the Open Directory Project has nearly 1.8 million web sites, collected and organized by over 25,000 expert editors worldwide, with more than 3,000 new sites added daily. Through the ODP, Netscape Search offers global coverage of the Web in 229 countries and 50 languages. Web-wide searches are conducted using Google's leading search engine technology.

Become a Contributor or List Your Site
The Open Directory is the world's first open Internet directory and anyone can apply to become a contributor. Users can also recommend new sites for addition to the directory and with more than 25,000 contributor submitted sites are quickly reviewed and categorized. The Open Directory Project editor tools are localized in nine different languages (English, German, French, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, Basque and Czech) for easy submission of foreign language sites. Finally, Netscape will promote the continued growth of the Open Directory by making it easier for individuals to add to the directory and by offering the ability for fellow contributors to contact others through the AOL Instant Messenger (SM) and ICQ services.
