Now Available, Allowing Communicator 4.6 To Work Seamlessly With Palm
Computing Platform Devices as Netscape Sets Standard for Mobile
Communications in Japan
TOKYO, Japan and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (June 15, 1999) - Netscape, a subsidiary of America Online Inc. (NYSE: AOL), today announced that the Japanese version of Communicator 4.6 features new Calendar capabilities to work seamlessly with 3Com Palm Computing platform devices, which represent 72 percent of the worldwide personal companion market according to IDC. The new release gives mobile Communicator users fast data access to the Palm Computing platform with the synchronization of Communicator's Address Book, Mail and Calendar. The new Japanese language version of Communicator's Calendar client software is downloadable free of charge today from Netscape Netcenter.
"With this announcement, Netscape satisfies the needs of our Japanese customers using Palm Computing platform devices while they are on the road, allowing them to take the Internet and their personal information with them at the click of a button," said Laura Yecies, director of international client product development and marketing at Netscape. "These users require a browser specially designed for mobile use. By adding synchronized data and Calendar support for Palm Computing devices, Netscape sets the standard for mobile communications in Japan."
With the new release, Netscape has redesigned the Address Book, Mail and Calendar to synchronize dates, events, contact information and correspondence between Communicator 4.6 and Palm Computing platform devices. The new release allows users to exchange information between the two platforms, with information updates and changes automatically reflected and synchronized in both. The new Netscape Japanese Calendar gives users the ability to more easily track their calendars, schedule meetings, plan events, better manage their time and improve work productivity.
"The Japanese version of Netscape Communicator 4.6 represents a major step forward in helping mobile computer users connect and synchronize their personal data over the Internet," said Mark Bercow, vice president of strategic partners and platform development for Palm Computing. "The Japanese market is vital to Palm Computing and is one of our fastest growing markets internationally. We are delighted to work with Netscape in delivering to the Japanese handheld computing market this innovative and reliable approach to mobile browsing and communications."
The Japanese version of Communicator 4.6 also includes enhanced Smart Browsing capabilities with local language keywords to help people find what they want on the Internet faster and easier. Enhanced Smart Browsing in Japanese lets users immediately access thousands of native-language Web sites by entering common keywords in their location field, and thus eliminating the need to remember complicated Internet addresses (URLs). For instance, consumers can type in simple, intuitive words such as "Toshiba" to quickly access local Web sites and Netcenter regional content. Smart Browsing also includes the What's Related feature, which has improved Japanese title handling and lists related sites and services to help users find information faster and decide where to go next.
Japanese language customers can also now take advantage of simplified Netcenter registration in their native language. With a single click of an on-screen button during the installation of Netscape Communicator, users can sign up for Netcenter content and services in their own language.
The Japanese version of Communicator also includes SmartDownload, the first software utility to give consumers the power to control the software download process. SmartDownload makes downloading easier and more productive by working around the problem of faulty telephone lines and disconnections associated with international telecommunications service. The SmartDownload "Resume" feature virtually eliminates failed downloads even if a user is temporarily disconnected from a network or Internet service provider.
Additional features include: Search, to help individuals use the Web and locate friends, family and business associates by name, email address or common interest; and one-click buttons to connect users to other Netscape Netcenter services.
