Netscape Netcenter Registrants Top 15 Million Worldwide

Netscape Attracts One Million New International Registrants

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., (April 15, 1999) - Netscape, a subsidiary of America Online Inc. (NYSE: AOL), today announced that Netscape Netcenter, the company's leading Internet portal site, has exceeded 15 million registrants worldwide. In addition, Netscape has attracted one million new International registrants in the four months ending in March.

"Netscape's rapid registrant acquisition is due in part to the popularity of the International Netcenter sites and the adoption of Netcenter services such as Netscape AOL Instant Messenger and Netscape WebMail by USA.net," said Mike Homer, senior vice president and general manager for Netscape Netcenter. "The combination of Netcenter's top-quality services blended with its award-winning client software can greatly enhance a consumers' or business users' online experience."

Netscape has seen tremendous adoption of its Netcenter services. The recently launched enhanced 2.0 versions of Netscape's AOL Instant Messenger and Netscape's popular WebMail services have both recorded more than one million new users each since the first of the year.

These popular services include:

  • Netscape AOL Instant Messenger - Netscape AOL Instant Messenger is a fun and easy way to instantaneously communicate one-on-one or in a private group with friends, family and co-workers. Netscape AOL Instant Messenger is a free service available on the Netcenter site and as a feature of Netscape Communicator 4.5.1.

  • Netscape WebMail by USA.net - Netscape WebMail is a free web-based email service offered on the Netscape Netcenter site. Netscape WebMail allows users to access their permanent email account from any computer with Web access, store up to 5MB of messages, create personalize messages using electronic stationary and cut down on unsolicited junk-email with a special junk-mail blocking feature. WebMail 2.0, released last month, offers improved performance, better integration with Contact, Netscape's online communication manager, and allows users to choose from a variety of new premium services including pager notification, virus scanning and email forwarding.

International Netcenter momentum continues to rise, with traffic and downloads steadily on the increase. Netscape launched International Netcenter 2.0 sites in October 1998 and daily average page views and software downloads have each doubled since the launch, demonstrating growth for Netscape International Netcenter. Today Netscape's content and commerce services reach millions of registered users from eighteen international sites.

Netscape Netcenter is Netscape's leading portal site that provides users with a home base on the Internet. From Netcenter, users can navigate the Internet, access a broad range of consumer and business content and services and communicate with others online. The site includes eighteen content channels, a set of leading-edge services including the new Netscape-branded Search, Netscape Contact, Netscape SmartUpdate, Software Download, Member Directory, My Netscape personalization service and WebMail.

Netscape is a leading provider of software and services for businesses that want to transform the way they create and keep customers in the emerging Net Economy. Recently acquired by America Online, Inc., Netscape is based in Mountain View, California.
