Netscape Expands Software Store on Netcenter

Netscape Creates Convenient, One-Stop Destination for Business, Home, and Educational Software, and Builds on Its Success With More Than 500,000 Online Software Customers

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (March 16, 1999) - Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:NSCP) today announced the expansion and redesign of its Netscape Store, a popular site for Netscape users upgrading their Netscape Communicator browser software, and for over 500,000 customers who have purchased Netscape-branded products. Renamed the Netscape Software Store, which is owned and operated by Netscape, a pioneer in the sale and distribution of software online since 1995, this new retail site will expand its inventory significantly to also include thousands of third-party software titles, books, and merchandise. To ensure a fast, easy online shopping experience and to accommodate future expansion plans, Netscape will deploy the Software Store using the Netscape Application Server, one of the industry's most reliable Internet application servers.

In addition, Netscape will tightly integrate several of its most popular software services into the Software Store, building on its success to date. For example, Netcenter's Software Download service generates 20 million free downloads of Netscape Communicator per quarter, and Netscape SmartUpdate, a one-stop source for downloading Netscape and third-party Internet/intranet software products, enjoys a base of 2.5 million registered users. The integration of these services will enable customers to browse, download, or purchase software all within a single visit. Live today in a beta version, the Software Store can be found on the Computer Shops page within the Computing & Internet Channel on Netcenter at http://home.netscape.com or by going directly to http://store.netscape.com/software.

"Netscape was among the Internet's first online retailers and a pioneer in the distribution of software online, so expanding our Software Store is a clear next step," said Maria Wilhelm, senior vice president of consumer programming for Netcenter. "We have a loyal installed base of over 70 million client software users, more than 500,000 online purchasers to date and a growing community of more than 10 million Netcenter members. By leveraging this enormous customer base and applying our technology expertise, Netscape is in a unique position to create the definitive destination for software shopping on the Net."

The selection of leading software titles available in the Software Store is extensive. Consumers will find the latest multimedia, entertainment, and education titles for kids and family members of all ages. For corporate customers, all the top names in communications, networking and productivity software are available, including titles from Adobe, Intuit, Symantec, and Microsoft. In addition, software books and documentation and even an assortment of 'logo' products are available to online shoppers.
