Leading Internet Portal Site Teams with CBS SportsLine to Offer Consumers Rich Sports-Related Content in Time for Super Bowl XXXIII
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. and FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (January 28, 1999) - Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:NSCP) today announced the launch of the new Netcenter Sports Channel and that it has selected SportsLine USA, Inc., (NASDAQ: SPLN), publisher of CBS SportsLine (http://cbs.sportsline.com), to be the premier sports content provider for the channel as well as the exclusive provider for news, information and merchandise for NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, golf, soccer, tennis, and auto racing, as well as NCAA basketball and football.
SportsLine's award-winning programming will provide a wealth of sports-related news and information, team scores, statistics, features, and polls ideal for everyone from the avid sports enthusiast to the casual sports fan. In addition to programming the bulk of the channel, SportsLine will be responsible for selling all advertising and sponsorships associated with that content and will create interactive fantasy games as well as a co-branded version of its popular e-commerce site, The Sports Store, for Netcenter users on an exclusive basis.
The new strategic relationship between Netscape and SportsLine kicks off with in-depth coverage of Super Bowl XXXIII, which includes such features as a fan poll, audio updates, interviews, detailed team statistics and histories, up-to-the-minute scoring information, and, for those attending the game, a special area including stadium directions and information.
"This strategic alliance with SportsLine brings us one step closer to fulfilling Netcenter's goal of providing best-of-breed content in all of our consumer channels," said Jerrell Jimerson, vice president of consumer programming for Netcenter. "By teaming up with SportsLine, Netcenter is able to augment consumer interests in major sporting events with rich and timely online content, information, and services, and provide them a way to participate in these high-profile events."
"The unparalleled popularity of Netscape's Netcenter Portal site provides SportsLine with an opportunity to significantly increase its reach among its core group of users," said Andrew Sturner, senior vice president, business development for SportsLine USA, Inc. "Netscape has one of the largest audiences on the web and we believe that this alliance will serve to reinforce SportsLine USA's position as the pre-eminent sports brand on the Internet."
