Netscape Announces New Netscape Meta-Directory 1.0
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. (January 18, 1999) - Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) and ISOCOR (NASDAQ: ICOR), a leading Internet messaging and directory software developer, today announced they will collaborate to deliver advanced meta-directory technology. Netscape announced separately today the new Netscape Meta-Directory 1.0 product suite, allowing legacy integration of corporate data into new Internet applications for Intranet, Extranet and e-commerce deployments.
Under the terms of the agreement, leading directory providers Netscape and ISOCOR are working together to deliver an open standards-based meta-directory technology. The technology will be the basis for Netscape Meta-Directory 1.0, a product suite that is expected to be available later this year from Netscape. The suite includes Netscape Directory Server, the meta-directory server, and a number of key connectors. Building on its directory integration strategy, Netscape is providing the suite to help companies better compete in the Net Economy by making disparate directory information from human resource systems, databases, messaging systems, network
"Netscape and ISOCOR are working together to provide a comprehensive meta-directory solution," said David Weiden, vice president of directory and security products at Netscape. "We believe this will help accelerate corporate deployment of meta-directories as customers increasingly embrace the solution as an industry standard."
ISOCOR's meta-directory product, called MetaConnect, includes a "join" engine that will be a key part of the combined meta-directory platform. The join engine identifies duplicate directory records in multiple directories and automatically combines the information into a single, more complete directory entry. The meta-directory platform will also use ISOCOR's connector technology to provide integration with a variety of information sources, including operating systems, telephony products, database applications, and others.
"With business to business electronic commerce expected to grow to more than $70 billion by 2001, meta-directory solutions will be a differentiating factor between success and failure for many companies," said Paul Gigg, president and chief executive officer at ISOCOR. "Netscape's choice of ISOCOR technology as an integral component of its meta-directory solution underscores the value of our innovative and open meta-directory platform."
Netscape Meta-Directory 1.0 will allow companies to integrate and operate internal systems more efficiently, while also integrating more quickly with new e-commerce/extranet systems as they move their businesses to the Internet. Pricing of the suite, which includes the directory server, meta-directory server, universal LDAP, universal database and universal text connectors, is expected to begin at US$3.75 per user for extranets and US$15 per user for intranets. Netscape's meta-directory suite is also expected to be available as an optional addition to Netscape Directory Server for Secure E-Commerce, also announced today by Netscape.
