New Teen and Senior Sub-Channels Go 'Live' on Netscape Netcenter

Netcenter Kids & Family Channel Features Content for All Ages

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (December 4, 1998) - Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:NSCP) today announced two new consumer sub-channels dedicated to teenagers and seniors on its Netscape Netcenter portal site. As an expansion to Netcenter's Kids & Family Channel, the company signed agreements with Kidsites 3000, Inc., an award-winning producer and aggregator of web content for teens, and SeniorCom, a leading destination and online community focused on the growing senior market. The launch of the new consumer channels are part of Netscape's Project Turbo, an aggressive internal campaign to make Netcenter the fastest-growing Internet portal. Both sites went live today on Netscape Netcenter, located at http://home.netscape.com.

"During the last 60 days, we have significantly expanded Netcenter's consumer channels, with a goal of providing award-winning content for individuals of all ages," said Maria Wilhelm, senior vice president of programming for Netscape Netcenter. "Our research shows that teens and seniors are two of the fastest-growing markets online, but are often frustrated by their inability to find information that's appropriate for them. By working with leaders in both the teen and senior markets, Netcenter is now able to offer a mix of specialized programming that blends nicely with the rich assortment of consumer content already in place."

Netcenter's new Teen sub-channel will provide teenagers ages 12 through 15 with a highly interactive web site that aggregates topics and issues ranging from sports, music, and relationships to choosing a college or career. This web community, produced by Kidsites 3000 for Netcenter, follows teens in their quests to "get real" - to pursue what they want - both in school and out.

"Although the teen market is growing rapidly on the Internet, very little is available to provide this age group with entertaining, educational and interactive content that relates to the issues and concerns they face," said Enid Karpeh, president and co-founder of Kidsites 3000. "Netcenter's Teen sub-channel has the potential to reach millions of young adults with the resources and services they need. It represents a new model for using the web to engage and serve this market without simply talking 'at' them."

To address the varied interests and needs of this mature market, SeniorCom will provide Netcenter with up-to-the minute information on health, financial matters, travel, homelife, employment opportunities and entertainment. The new sub-channel will also provide a number of links to government, medical and non-profit group web sites that serve the senior market.

"Our number one goal is to provide the mature market with a dynamic site that has relevance to today's seniors," said Tom Poole, president and chief executive officer of SeniorCom. "Joining together with Netscape to provide its Netcenter members with the useful, easily accessible information available on SeniorCom is a giant leap toward meeting that goal."

Accordingly to information posted on SeniorCom's website, the senior market was estimated to be in excess of seven million adults age 50 years and older. That number is growing rapidly due to several factors: an increasing number of 40-something baby-boomers moving into this age bracket, declining PC prices, growth in TV-based access and a desire among Internet-savvy seniors to keep in touch with distant relatives.
