New Technology Forms Foundation for Faster, Smaller, Standards-Based, Open-Source Client Software
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (November 10, 1998) - Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today unveiled its next-generation technology - code-named NGT - that will form the foundation for its future client products. NGT represents a new milestone in the development of smaller, faster, modular applications for a wide array of computing platforms, devices and information appliances. At the core of NGT is a revolutionary new browser engine and technology that enables the rapid deployment of a single, standards-based user interface that works across multiple computing platforms.
"Netscape's revolutionary next-generation technology is at the heart of our future client products," said Bob Lisbonne, senior vice president of Netscape client products. "The result will be open-source, standards-based browser products that are smaller and faster than today's products."
The layout engine is the brain inside a Web browser. It interprets data from Internet sites and displays the content on a user's screen. NGT's new layout engine will enable development of faster and smaller browser products in the future. It will improve the efficiency of displaying Web content while providing support for industry standards such as HTML 4.0, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS1 and CSS2), Document Object Model (DOM), Resource Description Framework (RDF) and XML. These standards are fully supported in the NGT browser engine and development tools, and in Netcenter, one of the Internet's fastest growing portal sites.
In addition to the improved browser layout engine, NGT provides the means to build new application user interfaces once, regardless of platform, using Web standards such as HTML or XML to create elements such as toolbars and buttons. This enables use of the same interface across multiple computing operating platforms. This technology will help speed deployment of future Netscape client software in addition to other applications.
Since its inception, NGT has been developed in conjunction with Netscape's Open Source project, Mozilla.org, incorporating feedback and contributions from developers around the world. Developers can access source code for NGT technologies, and contribute to their direction, development, and testing via the Mozilla.org Web site.
