VIENNA, VA, and MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA (November 4, 1998) - AOL's Digital City, Inc. and Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:NSCP) today announced the debut of Digital City's local content and community guides on the Netscape Netcenter portal site. Building on Digital City's current position as the leading Internet Online Local Content Network, this introduction makes Digital City's content from 50 US markets, already available to millions of users through AOL, AOL.COM, and CompuServe, readily accessible to Netscape Netcenter's millions of users. The addition of exciting local content to Netscape Netcenter furthers Netscape's commitment to provide best-of-breed programming for Netcenter members.
Netscape is aggressively promoting Netcenter's Local Channel with a button on the Netcenter homepage and links throughout other areas of the Netcenter service. Netcenter's Local Channel, now programmed by AOL's Digital City, features local perspectives and information on headline news, weather, sports, entertainment listings, movie listings, dining guides, event guides, auto guides, and relocation guides. Netcenter's Local co-branded channel is hosted under Netscape's domain, netscape.com, and incorporates a similar navigation scheme and look and feel to the other channels on Netcenter. Netscape and AOL's Digital City also integrates local community building features such as message and graffiti boards. Users of the Netscape Communicator client software will also be able to easily access the Netcenter Local Channel programmed by Digital City.
Paul DeBenedictis, President of AOL's Digital City, said, "The launch of Digital City on Netscape Netcenter significantly expands our distribution by making our local content available to millions of Netcenter visitors." "The Digital City local strategy is working and the growing numbers of interactive marketing partners and dollars are proof."
The increased presence and unparalleled distribution are driving local, regional and national advertisers to AOL's Digital City. With almost 5,000 interactive marketing partners and tens of millions of dollars in advertising and e-commerce revenue on an annual basis, AOL's Digital City has a full time localized sales force dedicated to generating revenue at the local level while also leveraging the power of America Online's interactive sales team, the largest in the industry. Some of its most well-known partners and advertisers include Barnes & Noble, Hotel Reservations Network, Cigna, Geico, Lexus, Metropolis Bicycles and others across the country.
"We evaluated the local online content networks and selected AOL's Digital City because it has the best reach and the best content by far," said Mike Homer, executive vice president and general manger of Netscape's Netcenter division. "AOL's Digital City on Netscape Netcenter expands Digital City's reach significantly and increases the quality of our content offerings - a win-win for both companies."
