MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (October 15, 1998) - Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:NSCP) today announced the debut of a wealth of new consumer content as part of its fall line-up of consumer programming on its Netscape Netcenter portal site (http://home.netscape.com). Netscape Netcenter's new programming includes Netscape Entertainment Channel and the Netscape Kids and Family Channel, within which are areas dedicated to Kids, Music and Celebrities. Additionally, Parenting, Movies, Television and Teens programming is expected to come online soon. The unveiling of Netscape's new consumer channels is part of 'Project Turbo,' an aggressive internal campaign to make Netcenter the fastest-growing Internet portal.
To deliver comprehensive, interactive content that consumers use most online, Netscape has entered into agreements with several notable companies. Entertainment Tonight Online will provide content for the Netscape Entertainment Channel and Netscape Celebrity sub-channel, while JAMtv Corporation and its flagship music megasite, the Rolling Stone Network, will be the lead provider for the Netscape Music Channel. The Kids and Family Channel includes agreements with companies who have demonstrated expertise in children's learning and play and family programming, including Children's Television Workshop, Ask Jeeves, BabyCenter, the Headbone Zone, Nickolai.com, MaMaMedia, Women.com and Yucky.com.
"The Internet is growing at a staggering rate, with over 300 million people expected to be online within the next three years," said Mike Homer, executive vice president and general manager of Netscape's Netcenter division. "Growing Netcenter into a leading Internet portal depends on developing programming that appeals to this diverse population, as well as making those online resources useful for people. Research tells us that consumers want to get more from the time they spend online. With interactive tools throughout our new programming and best-of-breed relationships, Netscape Netcenter can help users get the most out of each Internet visit."
Netscape Netcenter's new consumer channels are designed to bring consumers useful tools so they can take charge of their Internet experience. These 'smart tools,' designed to help consumers find the facts or information they need faster, are featured prominently on every channel. Examples include the Rolling Stone Network artist database, Entertainment Tonight's celebrities archive and Women.com's family recipe finder.
Entertainment Channel To Deliver Leading Content
With the Rolling Stone Network as the lead provider for the Netscape Music Channel, Netcenter users have instant access to the most comprehensive selection of musical assets on the web. News, features, artist biographies, concert schedules and live performances by Webcast are among the eclectic mix of information, sounds and events available online.
Netscape Debuts Kids & Family Channel
In KidZone, designed for the growing number of 4 to 12-year-olds online, children can begin to use the Internet as a resource, learning tool and place to have fun. Children's Television Workshop's Sesame Street characters encourage kids to create stories, while Yucky.com's Weird Science section lets them laugh and learn about their "gross and cool bodies." The site includes thematic surfing-and-exploration activities, combined with a multimedia digital design studio from MaMaMedia, a kids-only Q&A from Ask Jeeves filtered by SurfWatch, plenty of giggles at Headbone's joke metropolis, Smirk City, and fun activities to play with the digital duo, Nikolai and Neow Neow from Hoffman + Associates.
