Netscape Announces SmartDownload - A Free Netcenter Service That Makes Software Downloading More Productive

Powerful Software Virtually Guarantees Downloads and Is Proposed as Standard for Industry-Wide Adoption

NEW YORK, NY, Fall Internet World '98 (October 8, 1998) - Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:NSCP) today announced its plans to deliver SmartDownload, the industry's first software utility to give consumers the power of control during the software download process. SmartDownload will allow the user to avoid failed downloads with a new 'Resume' feature that helps assure successful downloads even if a user is temporarily disconnected from a network or Internet service provider. Additionally, SmartDownload will enhance the user experience with 'InfoBrowser,' an innovative feature that will provide the choice of on-screen product tutorials, informative content and services from Netscape's fast-growing Internet portal, Netcenter. The SmartDownload service from Netscape Netcenter uses a new file format called Internet Download Profile (IDP), jointly developed by Netscape and Software Builders International (SBI).

Also today, Netscape and SBI announced their plans to propose IDP to the residing Internet standards bodies for industry-wide adoption. Approval of IDP as an industry standard will help promote the adoption of SmartDownload among Internet software vendors throughout the world - making it possible for more consumers to download software with confidence.

"As one of the largest distributors of software on the Net, Netscape looks forward to providing consumers with greater control and information during the download process through SmartDownload," said Mike Homer, executive vice president and general manager of Netscape's Netcenter division. "SmartDownload will let users take advantage of the award-winning content and services offered by Netcenter, including the availability of Netscape Communicator. This will help Netscape grow its portal business and increase the distribution of its browser."

The number of software downloads from the newly redesigned and expanded Netscape Netcenter portal site continues to grow. Domestic client software downloads increased significantly by at least 66 percent from the end of June to mid-September, with the total number of worldwide downloads from June to September reaching more than 17 million. By making the download process easier and more productive, SmartDownload is expected to drive an even greater number of downloads and adoption of the popular Netscape Communicator client software.

"We are very excited to join with Netscape in developing IDP to enhance the software download process," said Boris Jerkunica, president of Software Builders International.
"SmartDownload will be the first utility to answer a common problem faced by computer users today: interrupted downloads resulting in wasted time and frustration. This combination of software and services will be a powerful tool for consumers and businesses."

The SmartDownload service is expected to be available with the shipment of Netscape Communicator 4.5 and later versions on Netscape Netcenter at http://home.netscape.com in early November. SmartDownload is an ideal product for home, small office and international users who are often subject to faulty telephone lines and disconnections. SmartDownload will also be compatible with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Internet Explorer.
