Netscape to Host Starr Report on Netscape Netcenter, Internet's Largest Download Site

Netscape to Alleviate Anticipated Traffic Jams on Government Sites by Providing Access to Starr Report on Netscape Netcenter

MOUNTAIN VIEW,Calif. (September 11, 1998) - Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:NSCP) today announced that it will make Kenneth W. Starr's report available on its powerful Netscape Netcenter portal site at home.netscape.com. Netscape's announcement is in response to the U.S. House of Representatives announcement yesterday that it will leverage the power of the Internet to distribute the report worldwide. Netscape will assist the government in distributing the Starr report from Netcenter, the largest Internet download site with more than 290 machines in 8 locations worldwide, to relieve the traffic jams anticipated by millions of requests over the next 24-48 hour period.

The 445 page report, which is expected to include a 25-page introduction, a 280-page narrative and a 140-page "rationale," will be available today. Later today, Netscape will go live with a new section on its Netcenter site focused on information around the Starr report including the report in HTML for viewing online, a synopsis of allegations and links to related topics. Access to the report will become even easier for Communicator users with Netscape's Smart Browsingô, because they can simply type into the location bar plain English words such as White House Crisis and Starr Report and others to find the information they are looking for easily.

Netscape has capacity in place which will allow it to support more than 20 million daily viewers and more than 2 million full downloads of the report each day from at home.netscape.com. Netscape operates one of the world's largest web site networks, with 290 machines in 8 locations around the world and a very high capacity telecommunications network, with more than 1000 megabits of bandwidth.

"Leveraging the Internet to distribute the Starr report heralds another significant step in the use of the web as a powerful tool for communicating real-time," said Mike Homer, executive vice president and general manager of Netscape's Netcenter division. "As the world's largest Internet download site, Netscape delivers an estimated average of 5 million copies of its browser software each month. Because of the amount of traffic to and downloads from the Netscape site each day, we are well equipped to help the U.S. government make this report available to Internet users around the world."
