Netscape Ships Netscape Communicator 4.06, the Latest Version of the Internet's Leading Browser Suite

New Maintenance Release Includes Fix for Email Vulnerability, New Smart Browsing Features and JDK 1.1 Support for Java Developers

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (August 19, 1998) - Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced the latest maintenance release of its market leading Internet client, Netscape Communicator 4.06, which includes a fix for the recently publicized security issue known as the Long Filename Mail vulnerability. Although there have been no known incidents reported to Netscape, the company is notifying customers and recommending that they upgrade to protect their computer systems from potential email vulnerability. In addition to the email fix, Communicator 4.06 is the first shipping version of Communicator to include integration with Netscape Netcenter services, including Smart Browsing features and a My Netscape toolbar button. Communicator 4.06 also includes enhanced JDK 1.1 support for Java developers.

"Netscape is advising customers to upgrade to Communicator 4.06 to protect their data and to take advantage of new navigation features," said Dave Rothschild, vice president of client products at Netscape. "Protecting the security of our customers' information is of utmost concern to Netscape. By upgrading to this new release, customers can prevent the potential threat posed by receiving a malicious long-filename attachment."

Netscape Communicator 4.06 introduces Smart Browsing features that enable a new concept in Internet navigation. These features allow users to find information quickly and easily anywhere on the Internet. First announced as part of Netscape Communicator 4.5 Preview Release 1, the Smart Browsing features include Internet Keywords, What's Related and NetWatch. "The Smart Browsing features in Communicator 4.06 represent one of the most significant steps forward in making the Internet easier for people to use," added Rothschild.

Internet Keywords allow users to access Web sites by typing regular words, or simple "keywords," instead of specific Internet addresses directly into the Netscape Navigator location bar. What's Related provides a user with a dynamically generated list of links to information about companies, services and products that relate to the site that the user is visiting. NetWatch provides a mechanism for screening Internet content based on two PICS-compliant rating systems, RSACi and SafeSurf.

For Java developers, Netscape's latest maintenance release includes integrated JDK 1.1 support. Communicator 4.06 also delivers built-in the Macromedia Flash plug-in and a Eudora Import utility for Macintosh users enabling email and address book files to be imported into Netscape Messenger.
