MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (October 31, 1995) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) and IBM today announced that they had signed an agreement to enhance IBM's Internet offerings by adding Netscape's clients, servers and other products to those already offered on the the IBM Global Network and on IBM hardware platforms.
The agreement to enable IBM to license and resell Netscape's open software products encompasses Netscape's complete product line, including Netscape Navigator client software, Netscape server software and Netscape Internet Applications.
"The Internet is unleashing a new generation of creative interactive applications that were previously limited by platform and network dependencies," said Jim Barksdale, president and chief executive officer at Netscape. "IBM Global Network combined with Netscape's open software platform will deliver these next generation applications to users around the world."
"Netscape offerings, in addition to those of IBM and other companies, will give us the capability to provide a range of Internet services and products to accomodate customer preferences and installed base as well as foster open systems," said Patricia C. Sueltz, vice president of platform architecture and business development at IBM Global Network.
Netscape also announced today with Prodigy Services Company that PRODIGY will license Netscape Navigator software products as an optional way to access the Internet in addition to PRODIGY's own browser.
IBM Global Network is the world's largest integrated data, voice and video network. It now offers Internet dialup access in more than 330 locations around the world, and will offer access in more than 530 locations by year-end.
