MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (October 30, 1995) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced that it has aggressively reduced the prices of its Netscape Commerce Server and Netscape Communications Server software products for UNIX and Windows NT operating environments. The pricing moves are aimed at further accelerating the adoption of Netscape's high performance server products, which are the leading commercial World Wide Web server software products in use today.
Effective immediately, the company has reduced the price of its Netscape Commerce Server 1.12 for UNIX, with integrated security, from $5,000 to $2,995; and for NT from $2,995 to $1,295. Netscape also reduced the price of its Netscape Communications Server 1.12 for UNIX from $1,495 to $1,295; and for NT, from $795 to $495. In addition, the company announced a new Netscape Server Bundle for UNIX platforms that brings customers Netscape Commerce Server, Netscape Proxy Server and Netscape News Server for $4,995 -- representing a savings of almost $3,000 over the price of the products purchased separately.
"Netscape's servers have sold well for both enterprise and Internet commerce applications over the past year. Today's aggressive pricing moves will help to further accelerate the adoption of our high performance, industrial-strength servers and security technology, creating a ready platform for a host of online applications," said Atri Chatterjee, director of server product marketing at Netscape. "In addition, the new Netscape Server Bundle for UNIX provides a great value to customers who want to take advantage of Netscape's full suite of server technology for their network applications."
Based on industry standard protocols, Netscape's open software products are designed for performance, ease of use, and security -- and create a complete platform for the next generation of live online applications. More than 12,000 developers are participating in the Netscape Development Partners Program for creating applications based on the Netscape open software platform.
Netscape's server family -- including Netscape Communications Server, Netscape Commerce Server, Netscape News Server and Netscape Proxy Server -- allows users to easily set up and maintain servers for publishing information and conducting commercial operations on enterprise networks and the Internet. Netscape servers offer increased performance over other HTTP-based servers by reducing response times and making efficient use of available processor power and communications bandwidth. The Netscape Server Application Programming Interface (NSAPI) lets the servers be easily extended or integrated with commercial or custom applications, such as user or transaction databases or full text search engines.
Netscape Communications Server is designed for organizations that want to deliver multimedia content to various audiences, such as customer support information to existing customers, online marketing materials to potential customers, or corporate information to employees. It includes basic access authorization, which requires a user to specify user name and password to gain access. The server can dynamically scale to handle heavy loads or be extended to incorporate new features and functionality using the NSAPI. Like all Netscape server offerings, Netscape Communications Server provides an intuitive, self-documenting configuration and management user interface for easy set-up and maintenance.
Netscape Commerce Server, in addition to the above features, adds the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) open protocol to enable encrypted communications over global networks. SSL is application protocol-independent and provides encryption, which creates a secured channel to prevent others from tapping into the network; authentication, which uses certificates and digital signatures to verify the identity of parties in information exchanges and transactions; and message integrity, which ensures that messages cannot be altered en route.
The new pricing for Netscape server software products is effective immediately. Netscape servers are available directly from Netscape and from Netscape's reseller partners. The Netscape Server Bundle for UNIX is scheduled to be available by the end of November.
