NETSCAPE EXPANDS MISSION CONTROL TO PROVIDE UNIFIED ADMINISTRATION OF INTRANETS AND EXTRANETS WITH LOWER COST OF OWNERSHIP

CABLETRON, CHECK POINT SOFTWARE, DIFFUSION, HEWLETT-PACKARD AND MARIMBA ARE AMONG VENDORS PLANNING TO EMBED OR INTEGRATE WITH NETSCAPE MISSION CONTROL

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (December 10, 1997) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced that it has expanded Netscape Mission Control software to provide a unified solution for the administration of Intranets and Extranets with greatly reduced cost of ownership for enterprise customers. The new Netscape Mission Control solution builds on the Netscape Mission Control Desktop feature of Netscape Communicator Professional Edition to deliver enterprise-scale administration of shared application data, including user and configuration information for the next generation of Netscape client and server software. Mission Control is the first administration solution to combine the cross-platform Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) open Internet standard with Java to provide network managers with a single point to administer the client, server and application software in their enterprise.

Companies such as BMC Software, Inc.; Business Objects; Check Point Software Technologies Ltd.; Legato Systems, Inc.; Marimba, Inc.; and Trusted Information Systems, Inc. plan to leverage the new Netscape Mission Control solution for the administration of their applications. The new solution also provides an embeddable Internet administration infrastructure for companies such as Cabletron Systems, Inc.; Diffusion, Inc.; Hewlett-Packard; Novonyx and Silicon Graphics, Inc. who plan to embed Netscape Mission Control into their products.

"Netscape Mission Control is an important leap forward in the area of Intranet and Extranet administration and a powerful value proposition for developers building on the Netscape ONE platform," said Marc Andreessen, executive vice president of products at Netscape. "By leveraging a central LDAP directory and a Java user interface, Netscape Mission Control makes it easier for companies to deploy and administer network applications."

The Netscape Mission Control solution builds on the Netscape Mission Control Desktop feature of Netscape Communicator Professional Edition and Netscape SuiteSpot Professional Edition to deliver administration of Intranets and Extranets. The components of the Netscape Mission Control solution include:

Netscape Directory Server software is at the heart of Netscape Mission Control software's centralized administration architecture. Independent tests show that Netscape Directory Server is dramatically faster than other leading directory software. Mindcraft recently released benchmarks that show Netscape Directory Server is able to perform directory searches more than 60 times faster than Novell Directory Server.

"The combination of Netscape Directory Server and Mission Control gives us the power and flexibility we need to control and manage our ever-expanding Intranet and Extranet environments, while also lowering cost-of-ownership and decreasing our application deployment time," said Brian Ehorn, vice president of Global Finance Web Development at NationsBank in Chicago.

Other companies integrating or embedding Netscape Mission Control include: American Internet Corp.; Axent Technologies, Inc.; Netegrity, Inc.; NovaSoft Systems, Inc.; Novera Software, Inc.; Oblix, Inc.; OpenConnect Systems Inc.; Resolute Software, Inc.; SR Gen, Ltd.; Ukiah Software, Inc.; and Vasco Data Security, Inc. Netscape Mission Control provides independent software vendors (ISVs) with a set of state-of-the-art infrastructure services that simplifies administration and lowers the cost of ownership for customers using their products.

"Deciding to embed Netscape Mission Control was straightforward for NovaSoft. Our products need standards-based directory and administration capabilities, and Netscape Mission Control puts us months ahead of what we could develop ourselves or get anywhere else," said Jothy Rosenberg, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Development at NovaSoft Systems Inc.

Netscape Directory Server is currently available as part of Netscape SuiteSpot Standard Edition and Netscape SuiteSpot Professional Edition. Netscape Certificate Server is available stand-alone or as part of Netscape SuiteSpot Professional Edition. Netscape Mission Control Desktop is available now as part of Netscape Communicator Professional Edition or Netscape SuiteSpot Professional Edition. Netscape Mission Control Console and Netscape Mission Control Software Development Kit are expected to be available in the first half of 1998. Netscape SuiteSpot Standard Edition is available in a range of per-user license packs beginning at 50 users for $3,495, Netscape SuiteSpot Professional Edition begins at 50 users for $4,750 and Netscape Communicator Professional Edition is $79 per user.
