(October 16, 1997) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced the Netscape World Shop, a new section of the Netscape Store International that gives users in more than 165 countries the ability to purchase and download online licensed copies of Netscape Navigator and Netscape Communicator client software. The Netscape World Shop is the latest element in the 'Netscape Everywhere' initiative aimed at bringing Netscape technology to millions of new users in homes, education and enterprises worldwide. The Netscape World Shop also showcases Netscape's new Electronic Software Distribution (ESD) capabilities, allowing shoppers to purchase and download software products, including subscription services, in an entirely digital environment.
Responding to worldwide demand, Netscape expanded the Netscape Store International to give users who prefer to shop on the Internet or who are located in countries with limited distribution channels the ability to purchase valid, licensed copies of Netscape client products. A service that has been available to U.S. customers since 1995, worldwide users now will be able to download and purchase Netscape Communicator client software with a subscription, Netscape Navigator client software with a subscription, and upgrades for licenses of Netscape Navigator 2.0 or Netscape Navigator 3.0.
The Netscape World Shop is available at http://merchant-int.netscape.com/. Users can currently shop in English, French, German and Spanish, and pay in U.S. dollars, French francs, German marks or British pounds. Other languages and currencies are planned for the future. Transactions include encrypted online credit card verification and an HTML and email receipt with a unique dynamically generated subscription number.
