NETSCAPE RANKS AS MOST POPULAR BUSINESS INTERNET SITE

MEDIA METRIX STUDY RESULTS REFLECT WIDESPREAD DEMAND FOR NETSCAPE'S ONLINE SERVICES AND CONTENT AMONG WORKPLACE USERS

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (October 13, 1997) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced that an independent report has found that the Netscape Internet site attracts business users more often and for longer periods than any other Internet destination. Media Metrix, The PC Meter Company, reports that nearly half of all workers who used the Web in August visited Netscape's Internet site, and ranks Netscape as the number one site in the following areas: minutes of usage per person, usage days per person and number of seconds per page viewing.

Netscape recently enhanced its Internet offerings with a new, free online service called Netscape Netcenter. With membership already topping 1.4 million users, Netscape Netcenter features a wide variety of compelling content and services for busy professionals.

"Our PC Meter research shows that business users visit Netscape's Internet site more frequently each month than any other - and once they arrive, they stay on the Netscape site longer," said Mary Anne Packo, president of Media Metrix. "The study results point out that workers using the Internet are spending more time with Netscape."

"The Netscape Internet site is becoming the online destination of choice among users in the workplace," said Mike Homer, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Netscape. "Clearly, Netscape means business to people who use the Internet as a resource at work, and this trend will continue as we establish Netscape Netcenter as the premier software, content and community resource for busy professionals on the Internet."

Overall, 44.8 percent of Web users at work visited the Netscape Internet site in August. Media Metrix data shows the Netscape Internet site ranked first among all workers in May, June and July. The Media Metrix study for August reports that U.S. workers spent an average of 33.9 minutes on the Netscape Internet site - more than any other Web site. Netscape also attracted workers more frequently than any other destination, with users logging onto the Netscape Internet site an average of 4.5 days that month.

The study reports findings based on research of Internet use among people at home and at work using Media Metrix's PC Meter technology. PC Meter's continuous panel of business users of the Web began testing in fall 1996. PC Meter started tracking home Web usage in January 1996. The actual Web activities of each panel member is tracked and recorded electronically by patented PC Meter software, which members install on their PCs.

Netscape Netcenter, launched last month, has gained more than 400,000 members in addition to the million initial members. The service is currently organized into three major sections: Content, which includes customizable services that bring business users easy, central access to useful and compelling news and information and leverage the features of Netscape Communicator; Community, which contains services to enable communication and collaboration between professionals and businesses; and Software, which provides services that make it easy for users to easily update and maintain the leading-edge software they need to take full advantage of the Internet and Intranets. Netscape Netcenter is a members-only community that targets the top 30 percent of Internet users.
