MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (October 7, 1997) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (Nasdaq:NSCP) and Shiva Corporation (Nasdaq:SHVA) today announced a licensing agreement to include Shiva's leading client software technology in Netscape Communicator 4.0 Internet Access Edition and Netscape Navigator client software products. Under the agreement, Netscape client software dial-up products for Windows 3.1 will include ShivaPPP, Shiva's client software for remote connectivity via modem-access. Together the two companies will continue to provide Netscape Communicator users with high performance, reliable dial-up access to corporate Internet, Intranets and Extranets, with complete flexibility in the choice of client environment networking protocol and server platforms.
With the explosive growth of the Internet, remote access has become a necessity for telecommuters and the expanding mobile workforce. Netscape Communicator users who rely on information that resides on corporate networks and the Internet demand easy access from remote locations, such as a hotel room or home office. Today's agreement ensures that customers will benefit from the simplicity and ease-of-use of Shiva's remote connectivity technology in combination with Netscape Communicator.
"Netscape Communicator and Navigator users will continue to benefit from Shiva's high-performance, remote access technology for dial-up connectivity," said Dave Rothschild, director of client product marketing at Netscape. "Today's announcement reaffirms Netscape's commitment to working with ISVs to deliver the most effective and reliable technologies in our products."
"Netscape and Shiva have teamed their best-of-breed products together to bring users easy access to corporate networks and the Internet," said Angelo Santinelli, senior vice president of marketing and business development at Shiva Corporation. "With Shiva's remote access dialer included with Netscape's client dial-up software products, customers can easily benefit from integrated online access as simple as a click and a phone call. It doesn't get much easier than that."
ShivaPPP is a single-user remote access dialer as well as the OEM version of Shiva's client software, Shiva Remote. ShivaPPP allows remote access to third-party PPP-based remote access servers, including Shiva's own LanRover and LanRover Access Switch product families. Connected to a Shiva server, ShivaPPP provides additional performance and security benefits derived through added functionality residing in the server. Additionally, ShivaPPP supports hundreds of modems, protecting companies' investments in existing equipment and providing maximum flexibility when evaluating future modem options.
