NETSCAPE AND DIGITAL ANNOUNCE AGREEMENT TO BUNDLE NETSCAPE CLIENT AND SERVER SOFTWARE ON DIGITAL'S INTERNET-ENERGIZED ALPHA SYSTEMS

NETSCAPE EXTENDS NETSCAPE EVERYWHERE INITIATIVE TO DIGITAL UNIX CUSTOMERS

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (September 22, 1997) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) and Digital Equipment Corporation today announced an aggressive bundling agreement of Netscape client and server software on a variety of Digital platforms. The companies also announced that Netscape will continue to support Digital UNIX as a strategic platform, and that they will work together in joint engineering and marketing efforts, specifically focused on optimizing Netscape server software for the 64-bit Digital's Alpha architecture.

Under the expanded agreement, Digital will bundle Netscape Enterprise Server 3.0 software with every Digital Unix AlphaServer and Netscape FastTrack Server 3.0 software with every Digital OVMS AlphaServer and Digital Unix Alpha systems. Netscape will also incorporate Digital's Ipv6 and encryption technology into Netscape products. As part of the Netscape Everywhere initiative, Digital will distribute Netscape Navigator 4.0 client software with Digital UNIX.

"The strength of Digital's relationship with Netscape ensures that our customers have access to popular Web server applications that let them link easily with partners and suppliers in the inter-networked world," said Harry Copperman, senior vice president and general manager, Digital Products Division. "Today's agreement reinforces our 'Internet Energized' AlphaServer program - by which we team business-proven Internet software with powerful Alpha platforms that can scale to meet the largest organization's needs."

"Netscape and Digital historically have had a strong relationship - Digital was the first company to OEM Netscape's products," said John Paul, senior vice president of the Server Products Division at Netscape. "The agreement announced today reinforces this relationship, extends the reach of Netscape's client and server software to a variety of Digital platforms and enables us to bring Intranet and Extranet solutions to our customers."

Today's announcement is a key part of Digital's strategy to deliver the most available, scalable and best performing Web-based computing solutions for corporate Intranets and Extranets, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and electronic commerce. Dr. Polly Moore, vice president of information resources at Genentech, Inc. in South San Francisco, Calif., said "Both Netscape and Digital are strategic partners of Genentech, and we are greatly excited about the enhanced collaboration between the two companies. In particular, we are pleased about the optimization of Netscape products for the Alpha platform. The investment protection afforded us by the scalability of the systems and Digital UNIX, coupled with Netscape's leading software, gives us a compelling choice for Internet computing."

Announced in August, the Netscape Everywhere initiative is aimed at bringing Netscape client software to millions of new users in homes and enterprises worldwide. The new initiative, called 'Netscape Everywhere,' includes more than 100 Internet service providers (ISPs), OEMs and telecommunications companies who are distributing and bundling Netscape client software with networking products, communications software and Internet services. Together with Netscape, these partners will bring more than 100 million copies of Netscape software to home users in the next twelve months. Netscape will also port Japanese, French and German versions of Netscape Navigator to Digital Unix.
