NETSCAPE HOSTS INDUSTRY SUMMIT TO OUTLINE NEXT PHASE OF CORPORATE STRATEGY

PRESENTS AGGRESSIVE PLAN TO EXTEND CORPORATE INTRANETS TO EXTRANETS AND CONNECT MILLIONS OF INDIVIDUALS TO BUSINESS PARTNERS USING THE NETSCAPE WEB SITE

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (September 9, 1997) - Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today presented the next phase in its corporate strategy, outlining how it plans to link people and businesses together through the Internet, Intranets and Extranets. The first phase of the strategy, Netscape's focus on the enterprise, was launched last October in conjunction with the announcement of Netscape Communicator and Netscape SuiteSpot 3.0. By the end of Q2 1997, Netscape had reached a key milestone in corporate acceptance, achieving over 200 Design Wins representing enterprise customer commitment to deploy over two millions seats of Netscape software.

Building on this initial success in the enterprise through the use of Intranets, Netscape is now launching the next phase of its strategy: expanding the number of 'Design Wins' and continuing to deploy the full service Intranet; working with customers to link businesses to one another for information sharing and business-to-business transactions and thirdly; leading the drive to connect business partners to the millions of professionals that look daily to the Internet as a means of providing online products, information and services.

Supporting this new strategy, Netscape has recently introduced new products and services. These include Netscape Netcenter, Netscape's new online service, the 'Netscape Everywhere' initiative, designed to distribute over 100 million copies of Netscape client software in the home, in schools and in businesses; and in Q3, Netscape plans to launch new electronic commerce products from its joint venture, Actra Business Systems.

"The strategy we are rolling out today doubles the size of our target business market. According to industry forecasts, the Intranet software market represents a $10 billion market by the year 2000. With the addition of the electronic commerce and Internet advertising and transactions market, the estimated market potential doubles, and Netscape intends to take full advantage of that enormous opportunity," said Jim Barksdale, president and chief executive officer of Netscape. "By combining the power of two key assets, the widespread adoption of Netscape's open standards-based technology in the enterprise and the traffic on the Netscape Web site, Netscape is positioned to pull business partners and customers together in one seamless universe."

Last quarter, Netscape rolled out Netscape Communicator and Netscape SuiteSpot 3.0, consolidating its position as a provider of enterprise software for building Intranets and providing groupware and messaging solutions. The needs of companies who now want to expand their Intranets to provide transaction-based services to customers, partners and suppliers through Extranets, can be served by Netscape's joint venture, Actra. Working closely with Actra, Netscape will offer customers Actra's range of CommerceXpert products. These products provide sophisticated transaction support and enable Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), in addition to providing interfaces to existing systems on a variety of platforms and delivering a high level of scalability.

In recent months, Netscape also expanded its Netscape Solution Expert channel program to provide channel partners with additional training and expertise in the design and deployment of custom Intranet applications and electronic commerce solutions. Netscape is now expanding its professional services division to support those same needs and working with over a dozen global systems integrators to meet the needs of this rapidly growing market.

Launched last week, Netscape Netcenter builds on the appeal of the Netscape Internet site as a center point for finding information and services online. Its role in this next phase of Netscape strategy takes advantage of this centrifugal force. "We have a marvelous asset in our Web site, which attracts over four million visits a day," continued Barksdale. "It is time we took more advantage of that as a mechanism to complement the reach and utility of Netscape software. Through Netscape Netcenter, we plan to offer the best business resources on the Internet and provide businesses a ready forum to reach their customers. Actra products will make it easier for those businesses and customers to expand their range of interactions, and using Netscape products both communities will be able to take advantage of leading-edge features and customizable services to better meet their online needs."
