MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (September 18, 1995) --Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today unveiled an array of open, secure software products designed to enable a new generation of live online applications that link people and information. Compatible with the growing base of multimedia content available online, Netscape products create an application platform that brings a new level of interactivity to users accessing or sharing information over enterprise networks and the Internet.
"The value of a networked environment goes far beyond enabling users to browse simple text and images: the real power comes with the creation and delivery of true interactive communications and applications," said Marc Andreessen, vice president of technology at Netscape. "Netscape's product line provides an ideal platform for the creation and navigation of this next generation of live online applications and content, enabling new ways of communicating and conducting business within and beyond the enterprise."
Extending its existing client/server software line, Netscape's new products
include:
- Netscape Navigator 2.0, a major new release of the widely popular Internet navigator integrated with a suite of new features and Internet applications including secure electronic mail and enhanced threaded discussion groups. Netscape Navigator 2.0 provides the platform for live online applications, supporting Live Objects, or interactive multimedia content, such as Java applets, frames, and Netscape inline plug-ins.
- Netscape Navigator Gold 2.0, a next-generation software tool that enables everyone to create, edit, and navigate live online documents. The product integrates WYSIWYG document creation capabilities into the Netscape Navigator 2.0 environment, enabling users to publish content in real-time that can include Live Objects;
- Netscape LiveWire, a professional visual development environment for creating, deploying, and maintaining entire online application systems. Netscape LiveWire provides a powerful environment for developers who want to create and maintain live content or live online applications for use within an enterprise or across the Internet.
- Netscape LiveWire Pro, which adds relational database connectivity to the Netscape LiveWire development environment for creating online applications with complete transaction and information management capabilities and easy integration with existing databases.
With the addition of its new products, Netscape's client/server software line provides an ideal platform for developers and content creators building a range of networked applications. Last month, Netscape announced the Netscape Development Partners Program for organizations developing products or services based on Netscape technologies. The program offers commercial and enterprise developers, creative and design professionals, value-added resellers, integrators and consultants software, tools, information, and support to make it easy to customize and extend Netscape technology. More than 2,000 developers have joined the program and will be creating or integrating applications using the Netscape application programming interfaces and Live Object support.
Netscape's products are based on industry standards and protocols, and are compatible with existing World Wide Web browsers and servers. The Netscape products announced today are scheduled for availability from Netscape and authorized Netscape resellers in the fourth quarter of 1995. The public beta of the US English version of Netscape Navigator 2.0 will be available later this week for downloading for evaluation use from the Netscape home page at .
In conjunction its new products, Netscape also announced that it will offer an upgrade program that enables users to purchase Netscape Navigator 1.1 or 1.2 today and upgrade without charge to Netscape Navigator 2.0 when it becomes available. Because it includes both Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 versions of Netscape Navigator, the upgrade program lets PC users upgrade to Windows 95 at their own pace. Upgrade pricing will be available later this month.
