NETSCAPE UNVEILS NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR PERSONAL EDITION FOR WINDOWS 95


MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (August 22, 1995) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced Netscape Navigator Personal Edition for Microsoft Windows 95, giving users of the new operating system one-button Internet access with the world's most popular browser. Netscape has teamed with leading national Internet service providers (ISPs) including Concentric Research Corporation, MCI Communications Corporation, NETCOM OnLine Communications Services, and Portal Information Network to ensure that users of Personal Edition for Windows 95 can choose the most reliable and lowest cost Internet access.

Personal Edition for Windows 95 includes the full capabilities of the newly released 32-bit Netscape Navigator 1.2, one of the first Internet browsers to integrate the Windows 95 user interface and advanced features. Personal Edition also includes full email capabilities, easy Internet access, and remote connectivity capabilities to give users a complete dialup Internet solution.

With Netscape Navigator Personal Edition, users can establish their connection to the Internet in a few easy steps, whether they are creating a new Internet account or using an existing account. For users that want to create an Internet account, Netscape has partnered with leading Internet service providers to enable users to select rates and services that best meet their needs. Personal Edition's Registration Wizard guides users through a short series of one-button online screens and then connects them to an online hypermedia listing of Internet service Providers, including NETCOM, Portal, MCI, and Concentric. Once users choose a service provider, the software sets up an account with the chosen provider automatically. From then on, Netscape Navigator Personal Edition dials the service provider directly when launched.

Included in Personal Edition, the 32-bit version of Netscape Navigator 1.2 provides an integrated graphical interface for network navigation, email, newsgroups, and file transfer features. It is optimized to provide high performance over 14.4 kilobit/second modems as well as higher bandwidth lines. Integrated security through the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) open protocol enables users to conduct secure personal and financial transactions over the Internet. Netscape Navigator also provides advanced features, such as support for full HTML 3.0 tables and backdrops for more visually compelling pages; MIME-compliant news reading and posting for multimedia articles; and the Netscape Client Application Programming Interface for easy integration of third-party applications.

The new Netscape Navigator Personal Edition includes the easy-to-use Windows 95 interface design. New features for users include:

Netscape Navigator Personal Edition for Microsoft Windows 95 will be available this fall in retail outlets, through Netscape's online store on the Netscape home page, from Netscape reseller and OEM partners, or directly from Netscape. A 16-bit Windows 95 compatible version will also be available for users currently running Windows 3.1. The estimated selling price is $39, which includes a 90-day warranty and customer support. Users who purchase Personal Edition 1.2 will also automatically receive more than $70 worth of offers from Cdnow, Lombard Brokerage, SportsLine USA, and ESPNET SportZone. Netscape Navigator Personal Edition requires at least a 386sx PC, a 14.4 kilobit/second modem, a recommended 8 MB of RAM, and 6 MB of hard disk space.

In addition, the LAN Edition of Netscape Navigator 1.2 is available now for Windows 95 and Windows 3.1, and can be obtained via anonymous FTP from ftp.netscape.com. Users who download the software do so for evaluation use only. Users can purchase supported, licensed copies of Netscape Navigator 1.2 directly from Netscape or from an authorized Netscape reseller. Pricing starts at $39, which includes a 90-day warranty and customer support. Volume discounts are available for multiple user licenses. Users who have purchased Netscape Navigator 1.1 or Netscape Navigator Personal Edition within the last 90 days are automatically licensed for full use of the 1.2 update, and can download it from the net.
