MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (December 11th, 1996) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced the availability of the Netscape Windowing Internet Foundation Classes (IFC) 1.0, a component of Netscape ONE, the open network environment, for creating a new class of distributed applications. The software is available now for downloading at no charge from the Netscape Internet site.
The Windowing IFCs are an all-Java user interface application framework that allows Java applications to be created independent of operating system-specific windows and user interface controls. This framework includes window hierarchies, integrated drag and drop, and all-Java user interface controls which give developers a way to create highly scalable, network-centric enterprise applications quickly and easily.
"The Windowing IFC will help bring Java applications to the next level," said Rick Schell, senior vice president of client product and platform division at Netscape. "Written entirely in Java, it is a user interface application framework that gives developers the ability to create applications that look and feel the same across a wide variety of platforms on the Internet."
"Netscape Windowing Internet Foundation Classes are an excellent example of the power of Java as an open technology," said Jon Kannegaard, vice president of software products at JavaSoft, a business unit of Sun Microsystems. "With the Windowing IFC, developers may deploy the native look and feel of JavaSoft's Advanced Windowing Toolkit or bundle the additional IFCs to deploy a common look and feel for their applications."
"The best news is that either way, applications are 100 percent Java, enabling developers to write applications once that will run anywhere," Kannegaard continued.
Developers can immediately download the Windowing IFC software, including source code, from the Netscape DevEdge Online site. The Windowing IFC will be integrated with the release of Netscape Communicator, Netscape's recently announced client software scheduled for availability in the first half of 1997.
For non-Netscape Communicator environments, developers may redistribute the unmodified object libraries with Java applications free of charge. Netscape ONE licensees may redistribute the unmodified Windowing IFC source code with their own products free of charge as well. Technical support and assistance for use of the Netscape Windowing IFC is available through the Netscape DevEdge program.
