VAL-PAK SELECTS NETSCAPE AS PLATFORM FOR CORPORATE INTRANET AND INTERNET


MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (November 26, 1996) -- Netscape Communications corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced that Val-Pak Direct Marketing Systems, Inc., the largest local cooperative direct mail network in North America, is using Netscape software for both its corporate Intranet and its World Wide Web site. Val-Pak uses Netscape SuiteSpot server software as a high-performance platform for creating, managing and intelligently distributing information and live, online applications. Val-Pak has purchased Netscape Navigator client software to serve as a cross-platform interface on the desktops of its employees.

The Val-Pak Intranet, known as vpOffice, provides corporate employees and franchisees around the country access to information anytime, anywhere. The Val-Pak Web site serves as a valuable Internet presence today and holds the promise of becoming one of the company's key coupon delivery mechanisms.

Using Netscape Enterprise Server software, the Val-Pak Intranet distributes HTML documents across the company and connects to an object-oriented database on the back-end. Netscape Proxy Server software serves as a management tool to help information systems know who is visiting which sites on the Net. Visitors to the vpOffice Intranet find ten key application areas. Four of those areas, in production and widely accessed today, include:

Six additional application areas are in various stages of development, with new information coming online every day. These applications include: Val-Pak, new to the Intranet mode of communication, has many plans for its corporate Web. For example, the company hopes to directly connect its Netscape software-based Intranet to a legacy system and a relational database that houses graphics information. Over time, the company plans to move much of its paper materials onto the Web as well.

The Val-Pak Internet site (www.valpak.com) features a "coupons on-line" project. Currently in test mode in key markets around the country, Val-Pak is using its home page to deliver geographically targeted HTML and GIF-based coupons. Today, Val-Pak's Web site provides the company important visibility to the Internet community, including advertisers and franchisees.
