VIVO TO PROVIDE WEB VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS OF COMDEX KEYNOTE FEATURING NETSCAPE CEO JIM BARKSDALE

USING VIVOACTIVE TECHNOLOGY, VIEWERS ON THE WEB CAN TUNE IN TO HIGHLIGHTS OF NETSCAPE'S CEO ADDRESSING INDUSTRY'S LARGEST TRADESHOW

WALTHAM, Mass. (November 19, 1996) -- Vivo Software, Inc., announced today that it will be using its VivoActive Technology to bring highlights of Netscape Communications Corporation's Jim Barksdale's keynote at COMDEX to the World Wide Web. Barksdale, Nescape's president and chief executive officer, will speak on Wednesday, November 20 at 9 a.m. at Comdex.

Visitors to Netscape's home page will find a hot link to Vivo's Web site for viewing portions of the keynote. A simple installation of the VivoActive Player, a streaming media player available free as a Netscape Navigator Plug-in, will enable them to view the footage, following Barksdale's address.

Netscape and Vivo technology will enable Web surfers to view segments of Barksdale's speech on demand. Even those not attending COMDEX can see and hear portions of Barksdale's address, which focuses on Netscape's vision for the Internet in 1997, at their convenience.

"To be successful, Web technology must not only provide instant access to compelling content, but also conform to open standards and give users control over what they see and hear," said Danny Shader, vice president of industry and developer relations at Netscape. "We are pleased that development partners like Vivo are leveraging Netscape Internet technology to give more people access to the information they want, when they want it."

Vivo is one of several Netscape supporters who have recently embraced the RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) for the control and delivery of real time streaming media. The proposed protocol is currently being reviewed by the IETF Standards body.

Vivo video technology also complements the new Netscape Media Server 1.0 and Netscape Media Player Plug-in now available in beta on the Netscape Internet site. Netscape Media Server delivers a cross-platform solution for publishing streaming audio content on intranets.

"Like the recent elections, COMDEX is a major news event that will draw many people to the Internet for timely information," said Dr. Staffan Ericsson, chairman of Vivo Software. "Combining our technology with Netscape's provides another example of how the Web is becoming a critical communication medium, and how video is becoming a natural component of the Web."

By using HTTP, the VivoActive software family makes video a natural component of the Web environment. VivoActive software contrasts with other approaches to video on the Web, which treat video as an adjunct or add-on requiring additional hardware or special modifications to established Internet/intranet infrastructures. VivoActive Producer and Player software eliminates the need for dedicated video server hardware, and conserves network bandwidth, enabling faster, more widely accessible video on-demand over the Web.

VivoActive technology differs from other Web video solutions in several key dimensions:

Vivo Software, Inc. of Waltham, Mass., is a leader in enabling the Web video publishing revolution. Founded in 1993 by a team of internationally recognized experts in video and audio signal processing technology, Vivo develops and markets VivoActive software, the only commercially available solution for producing and viewing low-bandwidth, on-demand streaming media (video and audio) over the World Wide Web using standard Web servers. Vivo's patented compression technology also is licensed to PictureTel Corp., which uses it as the basis for PC-based videoconferencing products.
