PALO ALTO, Calif. (November 14, 1996) -- As part of its commitment to deliver industry-leading Windows NT and UNIX system solutions for Internet and intranet applications, Hewlett-Packard Company today introduced the first UNIX system Internet and intranet servers with pre-integrated, business-ready software. These servers provide customers with a powerful, versatile and manageable platform for controlling and building mission-critical applications on the Net.
The HP Domain Enterprise Server family and integrated HP Domain Business Suite software incorporate system, network and application management and administration based on HP OpenView; Netscape SuiteSpot integrated server software; and enterprise-class electronic mail and messaging with HP OpenMail.
Designed to help customers implement and control information access, collaboration and core business-transaction solutions across the Internet and intranets, HP's Domain Enterprise Servers are easy to set up and ready to go in less than half an hour. They include the following features:
COMPLETE,
TURNKEY
ENTERPRISE-CLASS
MANAGEMENT
Unlike many competitive offerings, the HP Domain
Enterprise Servers deliver completely integrated system-,
network- and application-management to provide single-view,
multiserver configuration, management and administration from a
browser. The HP Domain Enterprise Server management system,
built on HP's industry-leading HP OpenView technology, is the
most comprehensive and powerful integrated-management system on
the market today and it allows customers to manage the operating
systems, systems networking, Netscape SuiteSpot Server Software
and HP OpenMail software.
The HP Domain Enterprise Servers include operations-management technologies based on HP OpenView IT/Operations, enabling customers to manage their complete Internet business solution, including underlying networks, hardware, software and databases. It consolidates events, including performance problems, to centrally monitor the health of distributed Internet business servers while gathering remote intelligence for automatic problem resolution.
The HP Domain Enterprise Server management system also includes performance-analysis templates for HP OpenView PerfView and HP OpenView MeasureWare that information technology managers can use to manage Web-server performance. Specifically, the server performance measurements are collected and logged by the MeasureWare Agent and can be alarmed on, viewed and analyzed via PerfView. With this new capability, IT managers now have clearer insights into the computing resources used in processing Internet server transactions. When combined, all of these features help information technology (IT) specialists better manage "Internetwork" service levels.
"The unparalleled performance of HP's Domain Enterprise Server family, combined with the versatility of integrated Netscape SuiteSpot software, makes the HP Domain Enterprise Server the best platform for customers building a competitive advantage," said Nigel J. Ball, worldwide marketing manager for HP's General Systems Division. HP Domain Enterprise Servers can help organizations get control of their Internet environments and achieve significant and rapid return on investment with new and transitioned business applications -- improving not only productivity, but time to market and customer service."
SPEEDING
DECISIONS
WITH
FAST
ACCESS
TO
INFORMATION
HP's Domain Enterprise Servers, in conjunction with
server software from the Netscape SuiteSpot line -- such as
Netscape Enterprise Server, Netscape Catalog Server and
Netscape Proxy Server -- and the new Netscape Communicator
client software put power in the hands of users by facilitating
access to information anywhere on the network. Users can
quickly and easily publish and manage rich context, index to or
search for key data. Rich and interactive on-line content can
be integrated and personalized. Documents can be managed from
the desktop, within the department or from one central location.
In addition, access control provides users with comprehensive
and personalized access to information while preventing
unauthorized users from gaining access to restricted documents.
"Netscape SuiteSpot Servers and the HP Domain Business Suite deliver an advanced solution for publishing and open email and groupware solution that enables employees to communicate and collaborate across the enterprise," said Eric Hahn, senior vice president of Server Product Division at Netscape Communications Corporation. "Together Netscape and HP are delivering integrated hardware and software solutions with services and support right out of the box and providing a superior platform for enterprise customers to build intranet applications."
IMPROVED
PRODUCTIVITY
WITH
COLLABORATION
SOLUTIONS
HP Domain Enterprise Servers provide users with
collaboration and messaging capabilities through the inclusion
of HP OpenMail and Netscape SuiteSpot servers. OpenMail is an
open standards-based, business-ready messaging infrastructure
that, in conjunction with Netscape News Server and the
Netscape Messenger and Netscape Collabra components of Netscape
Communicator, allows companies to communicate via e-mail and
groupware; publish and manage rich content; share calendars and
schedules; and conduct conferences -- enhancing team
productivity and communication across multiple locations. HP
OpenMail provides electronic mail services to any browser while
simultaneously supporting legacy mail environments such as
Lotus cc: Mail and MS Exchange and Explorer. The combination
of HP Domain Enterprise Servers, Netscape SuiteSpot and Netscape
Communicator provides users with a solution with significant
ease-of-use, deployment and management advantages over current
alternatives.

INTERNET
AND
INTRANET
BUSINESS
APPLICATIONS
The HP Domain Enterprise Server family provides a
business-ready platform with a rich set of tools to help
customers move beyond simple, non-interactive server
applications to mission-critical Internet and intranet
applications such as on-line service and support. These tools
include Netscape LiveWire Pro Visual Development Tool, the
Netscape One platform and Java Developer's Kit and Java Virtual
Machine for HP-UX(2).
To meet customers' mission-critical requirements today, HP Domain Enterprise Servers are supported by MC/ServiceGuard, providing the levels of availability necessary for Internet and intranet applications -- seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Additional security for core business transactions is provided by HP Praesidium Authorization Server.
PC Service Source (PCSS), a leader in service logistics and parts distribution, uses HP Domain Enterprise Servers to maintain a comprehensive, real-time parts processing system on the Net. The new system allows customers to obtain just-in-time inventory and order information while providing PCSS with an efficient, security-enhanced, cost-effective manner in which to conduct business transactions over the Internet. For example, customers can access their account balance, verify account aging, check on the status of orders or deliveries and obtain credit memos.
"When we first implemented our on-line service two months ago, high performance and scalability were essential to its success," said Zeke Zoccoli, vice president of PC Service Source. We wanted to provide our customers with a total account-management and order-entry application. This application needed to provide security, performance, and ease of use, while utilizing a standard customer interface. HP's new line of Internet servers makes it possible for companies like ours to develop and implement an Internet solution convenient for everyone."
BUILDING
TOMORROW'S
INTERNET
AND
INTRANET
APPLICATIONS
With the introduction of the HP Domain Enterprise Server
family and the HP Domain Business Suite, HP can deliver tighter
turnkey Internet solutions. Features HP intends to add to its
HP Domain Enterprise Server family include the following:
HP's Internet Consulting Program works with customers to assess the actions they need to take and which technologies they need to use to meet their business objectives for the Net. It will then design and implement an appropriate infrastructure and security architecture for the application. HP's Worldwide Customer Support Organization provides the ongoing support to maintain operations and also will take on those operations functions in an outsourcing relationship.
HP and Netscape also recently announced an agreement whereby HP will offer comprehensive, worldwide education courses on Netscape solutions.
