MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (October 10, 1996) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced that several independent studies indicate that Netscape is holding a strong lead in the Internet server and client software markets. Recent independent studies conducted by Forrester Research, Inc. and Zona Research Inc. estimate Netscape's share of the Web server market at approximately 80%, which is close to the lead Netscape holds in the browser market. Zona Research's survey attributed Netscape's significant lead to its wide range of server software solutions and cross-platform architecture.
Data published in April from Forrester Research, Inc. indicates that Netscape is the leading server software provider of sites surveyed, with 80% of Web site managers surveyed using Netscape server software, compared to 7% that are using Microsoft Web server software.
A recent report from research firm Dataquest stated, "In the Intranet Web server software market, Netscape is the software of choice in the majority of Fortune 1000 companies. There is every indication that Netscape will remain the top revenue-generating HTTP server software company in Intranets."
According to a September 1996 report from Zona Research, Netscape enjoys a dominant position for Web server software on the Windows NT platform, with 74% of those surveyed. Additionally, the survey found that on the UNIX platform Netscape holds an even greater percentage, with approximately 84% of all participants surveyed using Netscape Web server software. Overall, Netscape's nearest competitors among those surveyed are Microsoft IIS, with 11% market share, and public domain servers with 7%.
"Over and over again, independent research firms continue finding that Netscape software is being deployed at a dramatic rate through corporate Intranets and Internets," said Mike Homer, senior vice president. "We attribute our strong market position to the quality, breadth and ease-of-use of our products, which enterprises are using to cost effectively build a new generation of communication and collaboration applications."
On the Internet client side, there are currently more than 45 million Netscape Navigator users, making it the world's most popular PC application. Netscape Navigator has also received high ratings for customer satisfaction, with its new 3.0 version receiving the highly esteemed PC Magazine Editor's Choice Award in PC Magazine's October 1996 issue.
According to the Zona Research study, Internet and Intranet usage of Internet technologies is expected to experience strong growth. Zona Research's study also polled participants, who have Internet access, to determine what percentage of their organizations had Internet access and the estimated penetration within their organizations in the next 24 months. More than half of all respondents said that there is nearly ubiquitous Internet access in their organizations, Zona expects that percentage to rise to nearly 70% of all organizations surveyed having near-ubiquitous Internet access in the next 24 months.
