MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (March 27, 1995) -- Netscape Communications
Corporation today unveiled a broad suite of Netscape server software
products and Netscape Internet Applications that give individuals and
organizations advanced capabilities for serving and managing online
information and conducting online business. With the new product
offerings, Netscape dramatically expands its client/server open software
solutions for enabling information exchange and electronic commerce on the
Internet and corporate IP networks.
"Secure online commerce and communications are not a 21st century dream:
they are a rapidly growing reality on the Internet today," said Marc
Andreessen, vice president of technology at Netscape Communications. "With
the rich Netscape server and Internet Applications software suite, Netscape
Communications is making it easy for users to create online presences and
take immediate advantage of media-rich information and business
opportunities on the net."
NETSCAPE'S
PRODUCTS
ANNOUNCED
TODAY
INCLUDE
- Netscape Communications Server
1.1 and Netscape Commerce Server 1.1,
new versions of Netscape's popular server software products for online
publishing and commerce. Version 1.1 delivers Microsoft Windows NT and
UNIX support, the Netscape Server Application Programming Interface
(NSAPI), an enhanced user interface, and increased performance to companies
and individuals creating information services on the Internet or private
TCP/IP based networks. Netscape Commerce Server 1.1 includes enhanced
security options based on the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) open protocol for
Internet security.
- Netscape News Server, a new
member of the Netscape server family that
enables companies to create their own public and private discussion groups
for information exchange between employees, customers, or any other
audiences. Incorporating SSL, Netscape News Server lets users for the
first time create secure forums for confidential or proprietary
information.
- Netscape Proxy Server,
another addition to the Netscape server family,
provides secure Internet access and increased performance for corporate
users behind a firewall. Netscape Proxy Server provides high-speed caching
of information which reduces overall network load and increases response
times for corporate users requesting previously accessed data from the
Internet - reducing the cost of a company's Internet link.
- Netscape Internet
Applications, a new family of turnkey software
applications that enables companies to conduct full-scale electronic
commerce on the Internet. Netscape Merchant System, Netscape Community
System, and Netscape Publishing System are the first applications to
integrate high-volume transaction processing, real-time data management,
easy-to-use interfaces, and secure communications for creating
sophisticated online services and large-scale businesses on the net. The
fourth new application,
Netscape IStore
is the first Netscape Internet Application aimed at the individual business
owner. Netscape IStore provides the integrated data management, online
credit card authorization, billing, and order processing capabilities
required to build and manage a virtual storefront.
All of Netscape's products are based on industry standards and protocols,
and are compatible with other World Wide Web browsers and servers. The new
Netscape products are scheduled for availability from Netscape
Communications in the second quarter of 1995.
