MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (June 12, 1996) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced that its open software platform has achieved broad acceptance among Fortune 500 companies as the basis for their corporate Intranets. Ninety-two of the top 100 companies from the 1995 Fortune 500 list are users of Netscape's client, server or development tools software. These companies include such industry leaders as Boeing, Chevron Corporation, Johnson and Johnson, Merrill Lynch, Mobil Corporation, Motorola, Rockwell International and Xerox.
In addition, Netscape today published "The Netscape Intranet Vision", a white paper by company co-founder Marc Andreessen that outlines the company's vision for the full service Intranet. The paper, available now on the Netscape Internet site, provides an overview of the Intranet and examples of enterprise applications and customers. The paper also presents the Netscape product roadmap for future clients and servers that will enable the Netscape platform to meet even more of the requirements of corporate Intranets. The next-generation Netscape Navigator client software and Netscape SuiteSpot integrated server software family, codenamed "Galileo" and "Orion" respectively, are described in the white paper.
"Intranet solutions are being rapidly adopted within large corporations because they deliver the functionality of proprietary systems such as Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange but cost far less and are based on the open standards of the Internet," said Mike Homer, senior vice president of marketing at Netscape. "Netscape continues to lead this growing market by providing software today that delivers the high-performance, open, cross-platform solutions customers want. We plan to continue to evolve Netscape Navigator, Netscape SuiteSpot and the rest of our product line to incorporate even more of the features that Fortune 500 customers require for full-scale Intranet applications."
As described in the "Netscape Intranet Vision" paper, corporate customers are using Netscape client and server software today for a variety of Intranet and Internet applications, including:
All of these applications can be accessed via a universal client - Netscape Navigator - providing a consistent, low-cost and easy-to-use interface across the variety of hardware platforms typically found in a corporation.
Netscape plans to continue to refine its product line to meet the requirements of its corporate customers. In its "Galileo" client software - the next-generation of the highly popular Netscape Navigator due out within the next twelve months - Netscape plans to include such key Intranet-related capabilities as: collaboration features including electronic mail and discussion group enhancements, publishing capabilities, enhanced security and mission-critical reliability, offline and mobile support, and directory services for finding people on a corporate network; content creation and publishing capabilities; automation and customization features; platform extensions including Java class libraries and Java enhancements; layout and presentation capabilities; and improved forms functionality including computation, validation and easy creation via templates and editing controls.
"Orion", the next-generation release of the Netscape SuiteSpot integrated server family, which is slated for availability within 18 months, is expected to include new directory services, based on the LDAP open directory standard, for finding users on a corporate Intranet; agent services, which perform functions such as notifying users when a document is updated or alerting administrators when a user attempts to delete a file; replication services, to keep data current throughout a network; application development services, to enable customers to quickly customize applications; management services, to lower the overall cost of setting up and maintaining an Intranet; and security services, to provide end-to-end security features for identifying users, protecting transmitted data and preventing unauthorized access.
