SILICON GRAPHICS AND NETSCAPE COMMUNICATIONS TO DELIVER HIGH-PERFORMANCE WORLD WIDE WEB SYSTEMS

SILICON GRAPHICS' WEBFORCE PRODUCT TO INCLUDE NETSCAPE COMMUNICATIONS SERVER AND NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR SOFTWARE

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (January 24, 1995) - Silicon Graphics, Inc. (NYSE: SGI) and Netscape Communications Corporation today announced an OEM agreement that will make Netscape's open software for the Internet available on Silicon Graphics' high-performance workstation and server platforms. As part of Silicon Graphics' WebFORCE product announcement today, Silicon Graphics will bundle the Netscape Navigator client software with all desktop systems, and the Netsite Communications Server software with the WebFORCE Indy system and WebFORCE CHALLENGE system. The WebFORCE product offering also includes Silicon Graphics' new WebMagic Author, powerful content authoring software, and MovieMaster, an encoder to create MPEG-I and QuickTime Cinepak movie files, and enhanced digital media tools.

"Netscape is a pioneer in providing software that makes it easy for people to exchange information and conduct commerce on the Internet," said Thomas Jermoluk, president and chief operating officer at Silicon Graphics. "Combining these products with our powerful WebFORCE line will enable our customers to take part in this burgeoning market."

"One of the most compelling aspects of the World Wide Web is its ability to handle a variety of media in a seamless fashion." said Marc Andreessen, founder and vice president of technology of Netscape Communications. "Our relationship with Silicon Graphics will help users take advantage of the Web's multimedia capabilities. The WebFORCE systems with Netscape Navigator and Netsite server software create a powerful, easy-to-use platform for developing, accessing and exchanging media-rich documents on corporate networks and on the global Internet."

Silicon Graphics will target these systems to on-line publishing and retailing markets, and non-commercial areas, such as education and internal network communications. Netscape's Netsite Commerce Server is also available to customers as an upgrade.

The Netsite servers and Netscape Navigator software bring secure communications, performance and support to companies and individuals who want to create or access information services on global networks. The products offer easy-to-use interfaces for serving and accessing multimedia information on the Internet, including formatted text, graphics, audio and video.

The Netsite server line includes the Netsite Communications server software and the Netsite Commerce server software. Both server software packages deliver power, efficiency, and ease of configuration and maintenance to organizations, publishers, and information providers who want to create an Internet presence. The Netsite Communications server software is designed for organizations delivering non-sensitive multimedia content, such as online marketing materials, customer support information, and other non-secure communications. The Netsite Commerce server software, the first secure server software for the Internet, adds the Secure Sockets Layer based on RSA Data Security technology. This technology provides encryption for restricting others on the network from tapping into a transaction, and authentication for verifying the legitimacy of the server. Both the Netsite Communications Server and Commerce Server are based on the industry-standard HTTP protocol.

Silicon Graphics' Indy desktop system combines its own digital color video camera, digital media tools and advanced three-dimensional graphics. The Indigo2 product line offers the highest performance and most powerful graphics available on the desktop with a choice of XL, XZ and Extreme graphics. The CHALLENGE line is the industry's broadest network resource server line spanning from entry-level uniprocessor to enterprise-wide symmetric multiprocessing systems.
