NETSCAPE TOOLBAR LAUNCHES ON AOL TIME WARNER BRANDED CONTENT WEB SITES OFFERING CONSUMERS EASY AND PERSISTENT ACCESS TO POPULAR INTERACTIVE FEATURES
Time, People, Money and Warner Bros. Web Sites Benefit from Rapid Integration, As Well As Efficient and Cost-Effective Technology Infrastructure
First Step in Extending Netscape's Convenient and Reliable Features to AOL Time Warner's Family of World Class Online Content Brands
New York, NY, March 6, 2001 -AOL Time Warner (NYSE:AOL), announced today the launch of a new
Netscape-branded Toolbar on its Time, People, Money and Warner Bros. Web sites that provides visitors with easy and persistent access to popular Netscape applications. This initial launch is the first step in combining the convenience of Netscape's interactive features with the broad range of AOL Time Warner's popular branded content Web sites, as well as underscoring the Company's cost-effective technology infrastructure.
Visitors to the Time, People, Money and Warner Bros.Web sites, can enjoy anytime, anywhere access to the convenient toolbar that can be accessed from the top of nearly every screen of each site, and puts Web Mail, Web Calendar, Instant Messenger and Netscape Search -- all from Netscape, the largest and most reliable provider -- right at their fingertips. In addition, the toolbar features a pull-down menu to help users find special Netscape channel content ranging from personal finance and shopping to entertainment, games and music, plus a link to the Netscape.com home page.
For example, if visitors to Time.com find an interesting story and want to know more about the subject, they can simply access Netscape's award-winning search engine to gather more information from across the Web. In addition, they can access the toolbar to quickly send an email or instant message about it to a friend without disrupting their experience on the site. Netscape is a pioneer of many of these applications and one of the world's largest and most reliable providers of these tools.
Other AOL Time Warner content Web properties -- including CNN -- and additional Time, Inc. properties plan to roll out the toolbar in the coming weeks.
The new Netscape Toolbar is the latest in a series of initiatives to use AOL Time Warner's efficient technology infrastructure to enhance the value and reach of both content brand Web sites and Netscape, and create greater convenience, choice and benefits for consumers. Driving this momentum, the Company has already announced more than 400 commercial arrangements to integrate its interactive capabilities into the very fabric of its movie, publishing, TV, cable, and music businesses.
John Squires, who among his other duties also oversees Time Inc. Interactive, said: "The Netscape-branded Toolbar gives consumers another great reason to visit our various magazines' Web sites by fully leveraging the power of the Internet and the established clout of the world's most trusted brands in information and entertainment. The new toolbar makes it easy and convenient to access some of Netscape's most popular features and services from our magazines' sites and will provide an element of consistency across all the content brand sites."
Kevin Tsujihara, Executive Vice President, New Media, Warner Bros., said: "Being able to send a quick email, IM a friend or check their calendar from our site will make it even easier for consumers to enjoy an uninterrupted entertainment experience on the Warner Bros. site. This is another step in our efforts to provide the best - and most convenient - multi-media entertainment experience possible."
Netscape President Jim Bankoff said: "This new initiative clearly positions Netscape as an important cross-promotional engine for the AOL Time Warner network of Web properties. Netscape is all about convenience and choice. Just as we've done with the Netscape 6 browser, we're taking yet another major step to let users access the content and tools they need, wherever they go online. By making some of our most popular offerings available across the Company's content sites, we're making sure consumers are just a click away, no matter which content site they are on, and extending AOL Time Warner's value even further."
The Netscape-branded Toolbar features some of Netscape's most popular applications:
** Netscape Web Mail: Netscape's free, permanent e-mail account that users access from home, work and on the road, requiring only an Internet connection.
** Netscape Web Calendar: Allows users to keep track of appointments, birthdays, anniversaries and upcoming events, including sports, concerts, movies, music, trade shows and more.
** Netscape Instant Messenger: Based on AOL's Instant Messaging technology, Netscape Instant Messenger allows users to exchange personal messages instantly with friends, co-workers, family and members of their Netscape Buddy List from anywhere on the Internet.
** Netscape Search: Based on Netscape's Open Directory Project, the largest human-edited Web directory, and cutting-edge technology from Google, Inc., the award-winning Netscape Search is optimized for speed, precision, comprehensiveness, and freshness.
The toolbar also includes a link to the Netscape.com home page, where consumers will find the complete range of Netscape content, services and features.
The Netscape Toolbar is easy-to-use: Consumers simply select the application or content from the slim Netscape banner that can be accessed from the top of their screen to link to the appropriate Netscape area. If they are new to Netscape, they are then prompted to register, after which they have free, ongoing access to the applications and content of their choice. In addition, after they register, their names appear alongside the toolbar whenever they visit the AOL Time Warner content sites.
